It looks like I picked the right day to tackle Mount Marcy. That is her in that top cloud shelf (not the peak below that you can see). The weather is just rolling around and hovering over the summit. J-12 AVANT LE DÉPART POUR LA LAPONIE . Ce n’est plus qu’une question de réglages désormais. La matériel est vérifié et testé. La logistique est bouclée. L’itinéraire est finalisé. Les protocols sont répétés. L’état de santé est validé. Tout est prêt. . Quelques préparatifs finaux cependant comme acheter du petit matériel, sacs poubelles, mouchoirs, fil. Nous rechargeons toutes les batteries. Nous dormons le plus possible pour être en forme, nous éteignons nos réveils. Nous prenons du poids aussi, donc pas de limite pour les fêtes, on se prive de rien ! De rien à part d’alcool. C’est terminé depuis déjà quelques semaines. Un verre ou deux ne changeront certainement rien à l’issue de l’expédition, mais c’est une question de discipline. Nous avons également arrêté les entraînements de fond, pour éviter les blessures. . Autrement dit, on dort, on mange, on se repose. L’état physique doit être optimisé, comme notre état mental, pour nous permettre de traverser la nuit polaire. Nous reprenons des forces auprès de nos proches, et profitons de chaque instant avant le départ. On sait qu’ils sont précieux. . Toutes nos pensées sont orientées vers l’expédition. Plus question de tergiverser, désormais il faut cultiver la niaque.

-KNOW YOUR LIMITS- ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I set off for my first hike of the summer (yes, I haven't been hiking much at all recently) on Saturday and I chose Mt Shrimpton to get me into shape. Wow was I glad to reach this sign at the bush line. I am definitely not as fit as I'd like to be and the relentless uphill was pretty tough going! It was a hike that needed both hands and feet and there were some precarious sections though nothing too crazy. The forest is beautiful and I was lucky enough to see yellow crowned parakeets close up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Once I reach the alpine section I found that I was frequently losing the path as it is not a clearly marked way. The wind was picking up and I could see rain clouds heading towards me (photo 2). I wasn't far from the summit (photo 3) but I could see no path and with possible rain closing in, being tired and alone and knowing that in wet conditions and poor visibility some of the hike back down and path finding could be very tricky I took the option of calling it a day. I know my limits and this wasn't worth being gung ho about, a hike well done nonetheless. It's not uncommon for tourists to underestimate hiking in NZ. Conditions change quickly, you can be very isolated (I was surprised to see as many as 3 people all day) and there's no phone signal. It's wise to play safe rather than have to be rescued due to poor decision making and preparation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm happy to have had time alone and get fitter and especially to have got to take in some fab views. Can you believe that it is already December 14th? I feel like this happens every year, but I just can't believe how quickly this month has gone by! It's gone by so quick in fact, that I have yet to buy a single Christmas present! Usually, by now I would have already purchased and wrapped my Christmas gifts, but not this year! You may have seen in our story, but I did out our Christmas tree up on time! Although this year I put up two trees side beside, because I am just really extra...lol actually it’s because we usually buy a big live tree, but we decided to skip that this year to save money. So I put up the 6ft and the 4ft tree side by side so that all our ornaments would fit 😂😂 My grandmother bought Tuan Anh and I these cute little hiker ornaments to put up this year! They have little backpacks, and trekking poles. They are so adorable! For the next 3 weekends, we will actually be making the journey back to the suburbs for various family get together! Today, my mom is throwing a Christmas Cookie exchange party. We are also making ornaments - so of course this girl is excited for all the festivities! So excited in fact, I pulled out my recently thrifted Christmas sweater 😂 for my cookie, I baked some home made buckeye cookies 🥜 🍫.
